3 tips you must practice every yoga class. Spoiler alert – it’s not a yoga pose

When we think of yoga, our minds often go straight to the physical postures or "asanas." But beyond the poses lies the heart of yoga: a practice that is just as much mental and emotional as it is physical. Here are three essentials you should bring into every yoga class to deepen your practice – and guess what, they don’t involve striking a pose!

1. Breathe with Awareness

Your breath is your life force, and in yoga, it’s called “prana.” While it's easy to focus solely on your physical alignment, connecting with your breath is equally important. Controlled, conscious breathing can ground you, helping you maintain your focus and ease through difficult poses. In every class, make sure to take deep, intentional breaths that sync with your movements. When you find your breath becoming shallow or rushed, pause and reset. Practicing awareness of your breath allows you to stay present, even beyond the mat.

2. Embrace Stillness

Yoga isn’t just about movement; it's about finding stillness. The moments between poses, during meditation, or in Savasana (corpse pose) are just as powerful as the active flows. Use these moments to tune in to your body and mind, observe without judgment, and find peace in the stillness. Embracing this calm helps you connect to your inner self and cultivates mental clarity.

3. Practice Gratitude

One of the most overlooked aspects of yoga is gratitude. It’s easy to focus on pushing yourself to perfect a pose, but the real beauty of yoga lies in the process, not perfection. Each class is a journey – be grateful for what your body can do in the moment. Gratitude shifts your mindset from frustration to appreciation, reminding you that yoga is not a competition but a personal practice of self-love and self-care.

These three tips – breathing with awareness, embracing stillness, and practicing gratitude – can transform your yoga experience. So, next time you step on the mat, remember that yoga is more than just physical movement. It’s a practice for the mind, body, and soul.
